The Menninger Clinic®

Short-term Stabilization Service

Menninger's Short-term Stabilization Service offers inpatient care for adolescents ages 12 to 17 who are experiencing a behavioral health crisis related to depression, anxiety and suicidality.

This joint partnership with Texas Children's Hospital (TCH) accommodates adolescents who are referred by TCH emergency rooms. The service is located in Menninger's Adolescent Treatment Program so that patients can benefit from its healing milieu.

What's Included in Short-term Stabilization for Adolescents

Inpatient stabilization for adolescents is provided jointly by a team of Texas Children’s Hospital providers, including Baylor College of Medicine psychiatry faculty, alongside The Menninger Clinic’s adolescent team.

Adolescents in short-term stabilization can expect to stay in the hospital for 5-7 days. During this time, they'll receive:
  • Individual therapy
  • Family meeting
  • Stabilization care for symptom reduction
  • Medication management, if needed
  • Psychoeducation
  • Discharge planning
In addition, patients can take part in our outcomes program.

Care is provided on Menninger's 50-acre campus, just 10 minutes from the Texas Medical Center.

Next Steps

These patients are also able to benefit from an intensive outpatient program for adolescents should they and their families need additional support after they completed their short-term stay. Adolescent group therapy and family therapy are also available. In the near future, they will also be able to take advantage of a day treatment program for adolescents.

Covered by Some Insurances

Menninger accepts Aetna, Cigna, Magellan and ComPsych members for this inpatient stabilization service as well as the transitional day and intensive outpatient programs, and is actively seeking to accept additional insurers in the near future.
